Course Introduction
Nutrition is important for cancer patients because it can help them:
- Maintain their strength and energy,
- Prevent or treat nutrition problems,
- Decrease side effects of cancer treatment,
- Tolerate the side effects of treatment, and
- Prevent body tissues from further catabolism.
What you will learn in this course: (Learning Objectives)
- Understanding the importance of nutrition: Learning how good nutrition can benefit oncology patients, and how early intervention can improve outcomes
- Identifying the impact of poor nutrition: Learning about the prevalence and impact of poor nutrition in oncology patients
- Understanding the role of periodic nutrition screening and assessments: Learning about the importance of nutrition screening
- Understanding the goals of nutrition therapy: Learning about the goals of nutrition therapy for cancer patients, including preventing muscle and bone loss, and decreasing side effects
- Understanding the role of exercise: Learning about the importance of exercise in cancer care, including how it can preserve or improve muscle mass and strength
